Albrecht Dürer… where medieval craftsmanship met Renaissance vision

Spend the term studying the remarkable work of Albrecht Dürer, one of the most influential artists of the Northern Renaissance. Living at the threshold between the medieval and modern worlds, Dürer united the craftsmanship, symbolism, and spiritual concerns of the Middle Ages with the Renaissance pursuit of observation, proportion, and the dignity of man.

Through his engravings, woodcuts, drawings, and paintings, students will encounter an artist fascinated by both the visible and invisible world. Dürer studied nature with extraordinary care, creating some of the first truly lifelike studies of animals and landscapes in Western art. At the same time, his work explored faith, intellect, morality, and the mysteries of human experience.

From the famous Young Hare to the symbolic complexity of Melencolia I and the devotion captured in Praying Hands, Dürer’s art reveals a world becoming newly attentive to observation, mathematics, craftsmanship, and humanity itself. His work stands as a bridge between two ages—one looking toward heaven through symbol and one seeking to understand creation through careful study.

In this study, students will:

  • Explore the transition from medieval art to the Northern Renaissance
  • Learn how Dürer used observation, proportion, and craftsmanship to elevate artistic practice
  • Encounter early studies of landscape, animals, mathematics, symbolism, and the human person

This guide is designed to be used over one term (12 weeks), with one lesson each week lasting approximately 20 minutes. Students are encouraged to look slowly, narrate carefully, and return often—observing the details of Dürer’s work while considering the larger questions his art invites: What does it mean to be human? How do beauty, intellect, faith, and craftsmanship work together? And how can careful attention help us see the world more clearly?
